Lund - the City of Ideas
In Lund there is a spirit of learning more, achieving more, and making the future brighter yet. As a result of this, we call Lund the City of Ideas. Another result of this spirit is the vast number of inventions over the years. Did you know that the following things all come from Lund originally? The turbohaler, the dialyser, the mobile phone, the use of ultrasound in medicine, the tetra-pak milk carton, the ink-jet printer, the first machine for artificial respiration: the barospirator, the fingerprint reader, and many others.
Some of the internationally well-known companies are Tetra Pak, Alfa Laval, Sony Ericsson, ST Ericsson, and Gambro.
Lund has a long tradition of ground-breaking research and entrepreneurial spirit, giving rise to many innovative new companies - not a few of which are now established world leaders in their respective fields. This thousand-year-old centre of learning boasts a highly favourable business climate.
Over the years, a great number of knowledge-based companies have developed with the help of Scandinavia's largest university and the Ideon Science Park. Lund has positioned itself as a leading international centre for innovative research and industry.
Two new research facilities - ESS and Max IV
ESS (European Spallation Source) will open up entirely new opportunities for researchers within a large number of fields of research: chemistry, nano and energy technology, environmental engineering, food, bioscience, pharmaceuticals, IT, materials, engineering science, archaeology and more. ESS will enhance our understanding of nature and can be compared to a large microscope.
MAX IV is planned to be the next generation Swedish synchrotron radiation facility. This solution allows the production of synchrotron radiation with optimal characteristics in a wide energy region, fulfilling the needs of most diverse research areas.
The results of all these efforts will most certainly be welcomed by existing and new industries in Lund as well as in the rest of the world!
Establishing a business
Lund offers great opportunities for anyone looking to establish a business: Scandinavia's largest university, a highly innovative business climate and proximity to international markets. This environment has already nurtured many internationally successful companies, and tomorrow's success stories are growing steadily in the IT, telecommunications and life science sectors.
Excellent cooperation between the public sector and the research and business communities, as well as a comprehensive international exchange of knowledge, contribute to Lund's innovative business climate. Faith in the future is strong amongst the 260 companies that have established themselves in Lund's science park Ideon, adjacent to Scandinavia's largest and most diversified university. A new district combining business, science, culture and life called Lund NE (North East) is located and built in the vicinity.

Lund and the Region
The tradition here of cross-national exchange of ideas and regional and international cooperation is long and strong. Lund is an active partner in Region Skåne, the Öresund regional collaboration, and the European Union, for instance.
Lund is one of 33 municipalities in Region Skåne, the new and extended county council of Skåne (Scania). The Öresund region is one of Europe's most dynamic and expansive regions. Linked by the Öresund Bridge, it encompasses Skåne on the Swedish side and Själland (Zealand), Lolland, Falster and Bornholm on the Danish side, with a total population of some 3.5 million.
